This Monterey street known as
Cannery Row was once called
Ocean View Avenue.
The first of the canneries started in 1927. The area would be known as the "Sardine Capital of the World."
And it was.
For about a year while Norway was busy.
Getting the fish from the boats to the sea was a challenge because of the dangerous, rocky shores. Metal buckets carrying 600 pounds of fish were winched up to the canneries by wire cables.

Boats called clippers were used to catch fish. That was until cannery owner Knut Hovden introduced the purse seiners to his business in 1927. He also replaced the bucket winch system with floating wooden hoppers to accomodate for the bigger catches.
